Race: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Samsung Mobile 500, Race No. 8 of 36

Track: Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Tex.

Top-five finishers: Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne

Race recap: Denny Hamlin led just 12 laps on the day, but it was the final 12 to win the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas on Monday.

Hamlin had run near the front of the pack for most of the day, working his way up to second place. When the race was red-flagged for 20 minutes for a nine-car accident on lap 319, Hamlin took advantage. He passed leader Jeff Burton shortly after the final restart and held off a hard-charging Jimmie Johnson to earn his second victory in the last three Sprint Cup races.

Both of Hamlin's victories this season have come after he underwent surgery to repair a knee he damaged in an off-season pick-up basketball game.

Monday's race featured 29 lead changes among 12 drivers, with Jeff Gordon leading six times for a race-high 124 laps by himself. Unfortunately, Gordon's bad luck in finishing out races continued as he was caught up in that late-race accident, taking him out of the event. Tony Stewart, who led the second-most laps on the day (74) was also eliminated in the wreck.

With his runner-up finish, Johnson extended his championship lead over Matt Kenseth to 108 points after eight events.

The Cup Series will visit Talladega Superspeedway for the second restrictor plate race of the season next Sunday.

Companion event: Originally scheduled to be run on Saturday afternoon, NASCAR's Nationwide Series race was twice-delayed and run on Monday. Kyle Busch led 153 of 200 laps to win his fifith straight series race at Texas. It was his third win of the season, and Busch now leads Brad Keselowski by 20 points in the Nationwide championship standings.
