Event: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Price Chopper 400, Race No. 29 of 36
Location: Kansas Speedway; Kansas City, Kan.
Top-five finishers: Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya and Denny Hamlin
Race recap: Tony Stewart's crew decided on a two-tire strategy for his last pit stop, gaining the two-time Sprint Cup champion valuable track position on the race's final restart. Stewart used that stop to take over the top spot and go on to lead the final 29 laps en route to his second points-paying victory of the season.
Greg Biffle held the top spot with a nine-second lead as the end of the race neared. When the sixth and final caution flag came out, all the leaders decided to pit one final time for tires. Biffle and his crew opted for four fresh Goodyear Eagles, while Stewart took two.
Stewart led the field to the green flag on the lap 241 restart and held his competitors at bay, most of them on four tires.
This race was highlighted by the fact that 10 of the top 11 finishers were drivers that qualified for the Sprint Cup Series' 10-race playoffs. Stewart was followed by Chase for the Championship competitors Jeff Gordon and Biffle in the top-three. Points leader Mark Martin charged late to finish seventh.
Martin currently leads Jimmie Johnson by 18 points in the overall standings. Others within double-digit points include Juan Pablo Montoya (-51), Stewart (-67), Kurt Busch (-91) and Denny Hamlin (-99).
The Sprint Cup Series travels out west for its next race -- at California Speedway next Sunday.
Companion event: Joey Logano picked his spot and won the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Kansas on Saturday. After Kyle Busch led 173 of the race's first 196 laps, Logano worked his way by to pace the final four and take the checkered flag. The consolation for Busch -- he extended his championship lead over Carl Edwards to 245 points with six events remaining.
Goodyear quote by Greg Stucker, director of race tyre sales: "Even though the track surface at Kansas is aging and showing signs of reduced grip, our tire recommendation continues to work well there. That was evidenced by the great racing in multipe grooves throughout the weekend."
